Overcoming Church Hurt - Divine Goddess Awakened

Reclaiming Our Divine Feminine Power and Spiritual Roots

For many Black women, the concept of “church hurt” goes far beyond mere disappointment with religious institutions. It’s an emotional, spiritual, and cultural wound that cuts deep—often leaving us feeling disconnected from our spirituality, estranged from our ancestral roots, and burdened with shame for even daring to embrace our natural spiritual gifts.

The roots of church hurt are complex, entangled in the patriarchal and racist history of Christianity and other mainstream traditional religions that have long sought to silence and suppress the voices, gifts, and power of Black women. For centuries, religious institutions have positioned themselves as the ultimate authority on spirituality, controlling the narrative and often misrepresenting the essence of the divine. In these spaces, Black women have been historically marginalized, taught to ignore their intuition and to see themselves as inherently sinful or inferior.

The Patriarchal and Racist Legacy of Organized Religion

The oppressive structures within organized religion, particularly Christianity, have often served as tools to control and suppress the divine feminine, especially in Black women. Christianity was not just a religion forced upon our ancestors during the transatlantic slave trade—it was also a tool used to justify their enslavement. Patriarchal, Eurocentric interpretations of scripture were imposed upon us, erasing our ancestral spiritual practices and reducing the presence of Black women to silence or servitude.

In many traditional Christian spaces, Black women are often relegated to positions of submission, with our voices diminished and our natural leadership abilities overlooked. This history is not just oppressive, but also isolating—it severs us from the inherent wisdom passed down through our ancestors, disconnecting us from our roots and leaving us spiritually adrift.

Feeling Spiritually Disconnected and Cut Off From Our Ancestral Roots

When Black women experience church hurt, it can feel like being spiritually homeless. We are left yearning for a spiritual connection that resonates with our soul and honors who we truly are. The teachings and beliefs that were supposed to nurture and protect us often become the very source of our pain and confusion, making us question our worth and spiritual power.

More than that, these institutions have worked to cut us off from our ancestral roots—those indigenous spiritual practices that connected our foremothers to nature, community, and the divine feminine within. We may feel an internal pull toward our natural gifts—intuition, healing, prophecy, clairvoyance—only to be told by religious teachings that these abilities are “evil” or “wrong.” The result? Shame, self-doubt, and a feeling of being cut off from who we truly are.

Breaking Generational Curses and Reclaiming Our Power

Many Black women who struggle with church hurt are also battling generational trauma, often referred to as “generational curses.” These are the patterns of pain, suppression, and spiritual disconnection that have been passed down through our bloodlines, keeping us trapped in cycles of shame and fear. But the beautiful truth is that we are the ones who can break these cycles.

By reconnecting with our divine feminine energy and our ancestral spiritual practices, we can begin to heal ourselves and our lineage. We can reclaim the sacred power that has always been our birthright—the power to love, heal, create, and manifest in alignment with our higher selves and the universe.

The Shame of Embracing Our Spiritual Gifts

One of the most painful aspects of church hurt is the shame many of us carry for our spiritual gifts. We may feel the pull of intuition, the ability to heal others, or a connection to ancestors, but we have been taught to suppress these gifts out of fear. Mainstream religion, influenced by patriarchal values, has demonized the feminine qualities of intuition, emotion, and sensitivity—qualities that are often seen as weaknesses.

But these gifts are not curses—they are blessings. They are the sacred tools our ancestors used to connect with the divine, to heal, to protect, and to guide their communities. By embracing these gifts, we are not just reclaiming our own power; we are honoring the legacy of the women who came before us.
